Went to New Zealand Sept 2014. Book was very useful in navigating Auckland and North Island. I used it very frequently. I went to some of the recommended sites and restaurants listed in the book and I would agree with the choices. I would like to see a thicker book with more information, that is my only reason for 4 star. But I realize that NZ isn't the most popular place so they couldn't spend too much making the book. If you are ever in Auckland the best bar/pub to go to is The Occidental. I stayed in Rotorua for a week. That hot spring town is awesome. Rent a house to save money. Do not go to Hobbiton, its $80 a person for 1 hour guided tour, no free walking around. Wait a couple years when people forget the movies it will be cheaper. Cheers!
Perhaps I am not a typical traveler, or perhaps I went to New Zealand for the wrong things. I'll say this: I got the strong feeling that this book thinks every traveler is really big on eating expensive meals of the local food and wine. Well, not everyone is a "foodie." And not everyone can spend a lot of money on every meal. In New Zealand, even a quite ordinary meal is very expensive by, say, US standards. This book also is heavily skewed toward expensive hotels, even by the high-cost standards of New Zealand. So I found myself having to read this book carefully to find information that was not about food, wine, or the most expensive places to stay and most expensive things to do. New Zealand was lovely, this book not so much.
Excellent preparation tool for use prior to my New Zealand trip. Properly informed me of the area I wished to visit and made the trip run smoothly.
My husband and I honeymooned in New Zealand and before we left I read this book from cover to cover. I also read the National Geographic one but found this one much more helpful. There are all kinds of little roadside stop recommendations and our favorite lunch of the entire trip was from a tiny bakery we would have never found if not for this book. Because of this book we were well prepared and fit more into our time in New Zealand than we thought was humanly possible.
I did not notice when ordering that this is not the premium edition, however it was less expensive and seems to contain all the important information. I checked out several different guides from the library before i bought this one, and i liked the quantity and format of the information the best in Fodors. I guess i will have to wait till i take the trip before i confirm how accurate/current it is!
Good trip planning advice . We usually carry a Fodor's or a Lonely planet around during the trip for last minute advice. This book was very good when we need to navigate to places that did not show up on our GPS, clear directions were provided in the descriptions. Would highly recommend!
Very useful on my trip to New Zealand. It needs to mention that the Shark bus can pick you up to take you to the Aquarium from downtown Auckland. Loved the ice cream tip.
Great for planning our first trip to NZ. Very helpful overview and also individual town reviews. Still need to supplement with internet using travel sites for hotels to get the best deals, but this guide really helps you figure out where to go and what to see. Also helpful for planning which activities to try to do.
