The book goes into MGM vs Grokster, to discuss the issues in sharing copyrighted content such as movies. It looks at Tiffany vs eBay - should eBay be liable if miscreant users are listing fake goods on its system? Even if eBay does everything it can to prevent it?I realize any book on law is going to be a bit confusing. However, there were sections of the book that seemed unnecessarily dense. Several fellow students had trouble following along and in a few cases they even got the details fully backwards. The book could use a bit more work in untangling those areas so that the concept is clearer. As it was, I would have to "re-explain" the content in a simpler way for them to see what the concept actually was.On the positive side, the material is quite fascinating. Our class had lively discussions over the issues and cases brought up. Many people use eBay, Craigslist, and other similar online sites. The idea of how one could or could not be legally pursued as a result of those situations was thought-provoking. So in that sense, if the book was a bit easier to read, it would be good reading for just about anyone who uses the internet, not just someone taking a college class in this topic.So in general, well recommended. There's a lot of great, useful content in here for anybody who uses the internet to make purchases or post information. Still, I would hope that a subsequent version would work through the dense areas to make them clearer.I purchased this book with my own funds in order to take a college course.

I will echo the sentiment of another reviewer and mention the horrible DRM for this book. You can only have it on 2 devices at a time. I generally have books on 4 devices, my work computer, personal computer, kindle and phone. I now either have to delete it off of devices when I am done for a moment or adjust my ability to read the book accordingly. I went digital because I want the freedom and convenience that come with it. If this wasn't just for a class I would be asking for refund.Like was said, policies like this lead to piracy. I pay for something and then am restricted in how I can use it. I am sure there are people that will break DRM in order to view it on their multiple devices and then pass the book along just because when prior they wouldn't have.

The book is fine. It has some good content, but the DRM is terrible. 2 device limit? Atrocious. I like to have a copy on my PC at work, a copy on my home PC, and a copy on my tablet for the train, and since this author agreed to this terrible DRM practice by Kindle and their Publisher, I constantly have to delete and re-download it back and forth... And Kindle constantly things I have 1 too many copies downloaded, so that is not even a good solution. This is what leads to piracy and DRM-breaking software, unfortunately.

Extremely well-written textbook on the laws relevant to the Internet and cybersecurity. It covers legal topics in a logical and accessible manner to non-lawyers without dumbing it down for practicing attorneys.

bear in mind that this book is 4 years old in a very rapidly evolving field. there can be, for example, no mention of elonis v. u.s.

Of all our bread machine books, Langer's has provided more favorites than any other. Who'd have thought that semolina flour would make such great bread --no one could resist the sesame-semolina bread. A review here has been delayed for too long because each bread I've tried has been an instant favorite leaving little motivation for trying more recipes.So far I've never had a failure with a recipe, although I've needed to make an adjustment now and then, such as adding a bit of liquid to offset the dryness of flours in our dry air, or replacing a tablespoon or two of the flour with pure gluten flour to compensate for the weak flours found in Western markets. Part of learning to use a bread machine is learning to make such adjustments and to evaluate the dough while it's being kneaded by the machine (there's an excellent discussion in an early chapter) --it's a pity so many books pretend that good bread will always follow a by-the-numbers adherence to the instructions. My one criticism of this book for a beginner is that suggestions for evaluating a dough and making adjustments are too often separated from recipes.I don't know that I'd recommend _any_ book to be used alone by a breadmaking or bread machine beginner, including the manuals that come with the machines, but Langer's book will certainly be one of the most useful adjuncts to the manuals. It's become my favorite of the several books I've received since being given a bread machine, and I'm giving a copy of it with every bread machine I buy for a gift-- in the hope that Langer's immense appreciation of bread and freewheeling love of experimentation will sustain a beginner's breadmaking beyond the manuals and beyond the first disappointments (inevitable to any bread machine beginner regardless of the recipes he uses). The array of European-style breads and especially rye breads is especially tempting. The book goes far beyond table breads with many sweet yeast and quick breads and other fascinating concoctions.As always, Langer instructions are clear, the asides (especially the descriptions of bread experiments which didn't make the book) entertaining, and the illustrations by Susan McNeill pleasing and encouraging. There is an extra: somehow Langer has persuaded his publisher to achieve the perfect cookbook format: spiral bound pages within a hard board cover. It's the best of two worlds: the widely wire-bound pages open perfectly flat and the cover protects the pages --and there is a spine for the title so you don't lose the book on the shelves.

If you own a bread machine, this is the cookbook for you. It has many tasty recipes for many different types of bread. My bread machine has been a great time saver and this cookbook has been a valuable resource.

I was able to get a used copy through Amazon. Better than most current bread-machine cookbooks, it has many recipes for whole-grain and nutrition-rich loaves. Contains prized recipe for making Cornell Bread in a breadmaker!

Where this book shines is presenting the state of the forensic science when Watson and Holmes were investigating their cases. While Holmes claims a test for hemoglobin in A Study in Scarlet in 1887, Tidy in 1882 proposed a test with microscope and Dr. Henry Letheby used spectrum analysis as early as 1864. At the time of 1893, in The Naval Treaty Holmes admires the Bertillion system of measurements, but this was soon replaced with fingerprinting in Galton’s 1892 book Finger Prints. The book also does well in describing crimes of the time, and how forensics were used successfully or not. Doyle’s’ inspiration and teacher Joseph Bell may have helped solve the Chantrelle case of 1878. There are occasionally references to “Jack the Ripper” of 1888, and I think we all wish Holmes would have tackled this crime.The “Black dog stories” were popular at the time in Britain (under such names as Old Shuck and Galleytrot)… so the Hound of Baskerville on Dartmoor seem current.Holmes’ methods were used by his contemporary Charles Darwin whose prediction of the Madagascan moth fits with Holmes “From a drop of water a logician could infer the possibility of an Atlantic or a Niagara without having seen or heard of one or the other” The moth was discovered about 20 years after Darwin’s death. Perhaps where the book falters, is trying to describe to recent forensics (for example O.J. Simpson case).It pays to reread A Study in Scarlet, The Hound of the Baskervilles, The Adventure of the Speckled Band, The Valley of Fear, The Adventure of the Norwood Builder, The Adventure of the Empty House, The Man with the Twisted Lip, The Adventure of the Sussex Vampire

This was an enjoyable book, but it is like a two hour tv movie that would have made a great one hour episode. It also ends very abruptly, like a term paper that hit the required word count and just stopped. I bought it on Kindle because I am a big Sherlock fan and had looked at the hardback copy at my library. So I wasn't unhappy with it, but it was fluffier than I expected when I actually read the whole thing. Would I buy it again or just read the library copy? I would buy it only lower price electronic version or used version, and only because I'm into Sherlock enough to warrant the purchase. Just a tip for other SH lovers: check out fiction Holmes on the Range series of books. They're fun.

It's less applicable, and more historical but it's very interesting. Went along perfectly with my introductory forensics course and the sherlock Holmes cannon. I'd recommend it to anyone who likes SH, or forensics. If you're expecting to read it and become an expert in forensics or the methods of Sherlock Holmes you'll be disappointed. The only thing that'll make you an expert in those areas is rigorous study via textbooks or very careful analysis of SH reasoning abilities, but it does a great job of conveying what the author intended. It's a pretty short, scientific, and informative read. I liked it.

The title is slightly misleading. The book is about the history and development of forensic science in Britain and Europe in the century following Sherlock Holmes' 'birth' (He was born in 1853-54 since he was 60 years of age in August 1914 -"His Last Bow")The fictional sleuth paralells his real life counterparts in the use of fingerprints, footprints, fibers and smells on the site, chemical reagents, soil analysis, balistics, the finding from autopsies, the investigation of the habits of insects and animals, and other areas of crime scene and victim investigaton.A fascinating book for the lay person, especially for the Sherlockian and the mystery reader. I am sure the pathologist and the policeman will not be disappointed either.I suggest, however, that you do not read the autopsies and maggots sections during or just after meals - not without a basin nearby.

A very interesting comparison of real life forensics and crimes of the times and how they relate to Conan Doyle and Holmes. I do recommend it to those fans of Sherlock.

This is a fascinating mixture of forensic science, history, myth and literature. I completely enjoyed the comparisons of actual court cases and medical discoveries to Conan Doyle and Sherlock Holmes along with occasional tongue-in-cheek remark.

An entertaining and informative book, worth purchasing just for the bibliography. The author weaves together Conan Doyle, obscure discoveries, famous murders and hugely entertaining forensic trivia into an excellent overview of the origins of forensic science and scientific homicide investigation.

Caveat. I am not an artist or an art historian. I'm simply an art enthusiast. Even though I have already read several biographies on the artists covered in this book, this work offered fresh insight, new angles, and superb context. Like other reviewers have said - at first I could not put the book down - but later I did. I found that often I would read a few pages, but the boo aside and just think and reflect. I realized at some point I didn't want the book to end. Like good novels, the characters in the book became as if they were people I knew, and in each case, I knew, it would end. I felt a longing for a time when Art, literature and drama mattered so much that it was featured on the covers of major magazines. Now we live in a time when major magazines are gone, so many young people barely read, and art is assailed as a frivolous activity that should be removed from education in place of more practical matters. I know of the poets, the literary magazines, and the art of the time covered in this book but really have no idea if anything like that exists in this time. There well may be a similar movement now. So in the end when the last page was turned I felt sad,I wanted to story to continue and this great book to keep going. I am a voracious reader - I count this book as one of the truly great books I have read in my lifetime.

I’ve always had a difficult time understanding abstract expressionism. This is the first book I’ve found that provided insight into the makers, their driving ambition, their art practice, and their lifestyle. I may still not appreciate all the artworks but I do have an appreciation for the struggles and the sacrifices and struggles of the artists. While the focus is on the women, the story is much more comprehensive of the time, the places, and the personalities around the whole movement.

I found the book helpful, but the reason for the three stars was that the companion DVD with all of the exercise files did not work in any of our computers. I contacted the site that provides on-line exercise files for those who purchase the digital version of the book, provided a copy of my receipt for the printed book, and asked to access the online exercise files. Never received an answer.

Often when I use After Effects I end up only using a small handful of the effects available. Something I assume a lot of people do as well.There are plenty of effects that most people try once, don't see any difference and never try again. The After Effects Illusionist is essentially a guided tour down the effects menu to show what they all do and how to best use them in your After Effects work.Chad Perkins lets you know which effects are essential (including some alternative uses for them) and which ones are basically useless. And thankfully there's a CD with the project files, since most of these effects are hard to demonstrate in still pictures alone.It is disappointing that the standard 3rd party effects like Keylight or the Cycore effects aren't covered since they're so powerful. There is one small blurb saying they are covered on the book's website, but that doesn't seem to be true. Considering the included CD contains a few final chapters, one more on those effects wouldn't be that hard to add.The After Effects Illusionist is a book it wouldn't hurt to keep by your desk. It's bound to expand your After Effects vocabulary.

Much better that the standard Adobe text book. REALLY well laid out, and it's been written in a way to engage you into learning.This is a big recommend.

First let me say that I'm a big Chad Perkins fan. His books and especially his video training series are great. You can't help but love his enthusiasm and depth of knowledge. So I eagerly snapped this book up when I was faced with a project that required me to do a lot of special effects that I basically had no clue how to do. This seemed like the perfect book for that.Well, after having it a while, and reading some of the sections, I have kind of mixed feelings. What I was really hoping for was a good reference. A book that I could keep on my bookshelf and when I wanted to figure out how to use a certain effect in After Effects, I'd look up that effect in the appendix, turn to the chapter, and read what the various knobs mean and how to effectively use it. Sadly, it's not really that kind of book. It is well organized, and it contains a lot of good information. But when you look up an effect, instead of getting a very concise explanation of how it works and what the knobs do, Chad give you more of "here's one way you can use it".Anyhow, decent book, I'm glad that I got it. Reading through the chapters is interesting and instructive, but I'm still left looking for an ideal reference manual to the effects in After Effects.

It's a shame that other reviewers rated this as trash or made up. Unfortunately for some of us, we have lived these horrors, some worse than others. I related to his story and life. I felt the same way and empathized. Only those of us who rose from the ashes of disfunctional families and secrets will understand. To others who are horrified or simply can not believe that there are people who grew up in ways that are hard to comprehend, instead of turning your back and making a crude comment, (something we are used to btw), be greatful you did not have to endure this type of life.

Manson has unleashed the working of his mind in this book. It definitely left me wanting more. It chronicles his life and career up to the Antichrist Superstar lp. He is very candid about much more than just the typical rockstar sex and drugs though there is plenty of that as well.Personally I wish there was more, his career and music has continued to grow. He has become a much better songwriter since these early days ( the more you do something the better you get, unless you suck which he definitely does not).If he ever writes another volume I will definitely be reading it,

I've not only read this book twice in recent years but listened to the audio book version. Every time I read it, I'm always captivated. The book, in very thorough detail, covers key aspects of his childhood that helped form him not only into the entertainer he has been since the 90's, but also gives insight into how he has arrived at the opinions, morals, and personality he has. He goes into his ups and downs that frequently come with stardom, especially when you're not the typical "rock star". Without question, one of the most brilliant minds in the music business.

Too much is made in the reviews about the parallels with Dante and the 'journey through hell' Manson goes through. This isn't that at all. The header references to Dante are just a tongue-in-cheek book design touch. This is a rock autobiography by a rocker who was a writer before he took to being a musician. Therefore it is a very well written rock autobiography. In addition Rolling Stone guy's guy rock-star author Neil Strauss is a co-writer. So it's very well written and very polished. If you like the genre, you will eat this up. Personally, I knew little about Marilyn Manson going in and enjoyed his candid account of his remarkable life story and rise to fame. A great read.

Totally amazing tell all. This book is written with such a consumable mind set. He doesn't hold back and you will be shocked about his early life and how it shaped his belief in deity. I am just amazed how he's still alive and touring. Some people are just indestructible.. This book is extremely well put together with art, and photos. I have read other autobiographies and this one is hard to put down.. you just want to keep reading it more and more. The only thing is that it is written in 1998 and he has gone on to do so much more with his life after this.. He definitely needs to do another one detailing his transformation from goth shock rock to mutant android and back again to dark dirty glam rock.. A must for any Manson fan!

Arrived in great condition and on time. I purchased this as a replacement as my original copy was damaged. I think it's a great read for anyone that likes Marilyn Manson or anyone that is just curious to know more about him. It does have some explicit content (drug use and sex) so perhaps not age appropriate or everyone.

Amazing book! Big manson fan,and honestly for anyone who has a negative outlook on him or just needs a eye opener this is the book,he is truly a unique individual That alot of people over look due to his performances. Read it you won't regret!

This book is amazing, I would recommended it to anyone who can overcome the harsh language and see the value of the things he has to say. It will make you feel empathy for him and the people he has crossed paths with, then at other times you will laugh (for me probably the hardest Ive ever laughed at a book). There's something about the instances where he feels guilt or sympathy for others that seemed sparked small amounts of humanity in him one at a time. He became the rock star he always wanted to be growing up and built a legacy on shocking people, and when you look past his shocking exterior you see he is one driven and intelligent individual
