John M. Grimsrud lives with his wife Jane in Mérida, Yucatan, in an ecologically friendly home of his own design. He has been biking, photographing, exploring, and writing about the Yucatan for over twenty-five years. Prior to seeking a new life of adventure in Yucatan, Mexico, John and his wife lived aboard their home built 46-foot sailboat Dursmirg for many years. My wife and I have been to the Yucatan several times and were getting tired of the many tourist attractions. This book in the title promises "side trips", which it does in detail. The stories are personal and well written, but being a traveler and not a local, I had no idea where the stories described were actualy located. If this book had maps and diagrams I would have given it 5 starts easy. I enjoyed the stories and the detail but without the town/city maps I was at a loss.Add in a lot of maps and take out a few of the personal pictures and this would be the perfect side trip book.Looking forward to the next edition...

It is full of interesting bits and pieces but the material seems scattered. I think more judicious editing would make it more readable. It's obvious the writer loves the Yucatan as much as I do, though. For that alone it's an interesting, although a bit bumpy, read.
Cute stories but it was so off-the-beaten path biking style that it wasn't quite what we needed for driving. But for the towns we did go through that they went through it was interesting stories. But they did totally random stuff and entered people's homes. Got the essence and feeling of their adventure but totally different than our adventure
typical guide book, helpful but not great--did find some interesting spots.

contains a lot of useful information and very little of the irrelevant stuff that can clutter a standard travel book
