I had mixed emotions reading this book. I did find some useful tips in the second half of the book, on the other hand the writing style of the author is fairly verbose and somewhat repetitive. In a how-to manual I prefer crisp and clear instructions rather than a conversational style. At times I thought the author's tone was slightly condescending to those who are less experienced amateur photographers. Since these folks are the target audience for the book I think it would have been better to take those comments out during the editorial process. This book is based on "On Target Photo Training" newsletter written by the author. This book combined daily writings and this is probably why some information is repeated multiple times, as in a newsletter the author might want to re-enforce some of his favorite points in multiple publication. However the repetitions were not edited out in the book that combines the all publications.A lot of the tips in the first half of the book are very basic, useful for beginner but a bit boring for someone with a little bit of experience. The second half, I thought, was more interesting and addressed a wider audience not just beginners. Many of the photos included in the book are very nice, I would have liked to hear more about each photo - how it was taken, how it was edit in Photoshop, how it was cropped to achieve better composition. My favorite tip? Reversible center column tripod.Ali Julia review
Here is a guy who lets you in on his secrets to better photography. What I appreciated is his "outside the box thinking" which is similar to mine. This is where real creativity comes in and sets you apart and he says the same thing in the book. Over the years I have read many photographic magazines and books and this guy breaks it down to its simplest concepts and makes it easy to understand for even the rank newbie. I also like from a business point of view that he has all his other books featured at the end of this book. Nice marketing touch. So do yourself a favor, if you want to be a better photographer, buy this book and STUDY it.I particularly liked his explanation that you need to get your camera and follow his directions during multiple shoots to master a techniqe and then go on to the next one. Great photographers are not born but made through study, trial and error and "outside the box thinking" Kudos sir to a great book
I found this in my Kindle library ( I must have bought it a long time ago) and decided to give it a quick read. WowIm glad I did, I learned a lot, things I never thought about. Great tips not only for photography but being prepared and setting yourself up for success (read the manual once a year and keep a journal). Highly recommended and I look forward to reading more of the author’s photo books.
Dan's approach is easy and to the point. He give the photographer basic advise that sets up an easy to understand foundation to taking pictures. I've learned why some of my pictures turn out like they do, and learned how to fix many common mistakes. The exercises he provides are easy and fun. I do not remember reading any "how to" book that is this easy to understand and will make you smile at the same time. Worth the read if you want to improve you pictures.Today was a "field trip" of sorts to practice a few of the tips from this book. I went to the LA Arboretum for the first time. I set my camera on the "A" setting or Aperture Priority Auto Mode. I'm determined to learn all of the bells and whistles that my camera has. I played with the f-stop setting and was very excited when I got shots of the waterfall ... this was an excellent exercise! I have a picture of the water in that lovely soft cotton candy look and another with the water fall very clear. If you want to be a better photographer, the tips in this book are easy and do help! Next week to another location to master a different function on my camera.
This series sets a solid foundation for beginners. If you've been to many professionally taught photography classes or you've been a professional photographer, most (though not all) of what is covered in Dan Eitreim's books will have already been learned. However, if you want to keep your instructor's advice on your computer, these books are sopt on.For the beginner, who just received their first DSLR camera and who wants to really learn how to have fantastic shots using the settings, not just the green auto box, these books are perfect. Dan starts at a basic level and walks through the theory and the how to so you know not only what you are doing, but why you are doing it.A key to taking good steady shots is a stable foundation (how you place your feet). These books give the photographer a steady foundation of knowledge and know how on which to build beautiful photography.
Dan Eitreim Dan@OnTargetPhotoTraining.com For the very best of reasons Mr. Eitrem is worthy of great praise. This writing on the subject is clear concise and easily understood. The range and depth of Mr. Eitreim's knowledge of photography and technique is outstanding. Tho not exhaustive in the entire world of photography a truly valuable tool for the beginner to advanced photographer. He is able to make the complex easy to understand. I would recommend this to anyone with a need to see things from a different point of view. A very experienced and talented photographer who knows his subject.
...packed into concise chapters. I consider myself a casual photographer who has always used the auto setting when I shoot, even on the versatile Nikon D5000 I bought a year or so ago. The author challenges you to change your mindset and so I've started dabbling with the manual setting and forcing myself to learn the relationship between shutter speed and light. It's not an easy concept for me to grasp, but I'm finding that the more I shoot in different kinds of light, the more I'm able to make the correct adjustments in my first shot. I'm really looking forward to reading Mr. Eitreim's next book "7 Secrets to Creating Stunning Photos" as well as others in his series. Thank you for all the great tips!
