Packing light isn't just about saving time or moneyit's about having a great traveling lifestyle. Rick Stevestravel expert and author of this brand new, colorful, lightweight city guide to Florenceshares his tips for packing light while traveling:1. Stick to a one bag limit: Rick’s self-imposed limit is 20 pounds in a 9" × 22" × 14" carry-on-size bag, which fits in an airplane's overhead bin!2. Do a tourist test in town: Before flying to Europe, do a tourist test. Pack up completely, go into town, and practice being a tourist for an hour. Fully loaded, the goal is to be able to enjoy window-shopping. Can’t? Stagger home and thin things out.3. Scrutinize: Spread everything out on the living room floor. Pick up each item one at a time and scrutinize it. Ask if the item is needed enough to justify carrying it around all summer.4. When in doubt, leave it out: Don't pack for the worst-case scenario. Pack for the best-case scenario and simply buy something abroad to get out of any jams. Bring layers rather than taking a heavy coat. Think in terms of what can be left outnot what will be handy on the trip.5. Pack light and bring the right guidebook: Whether traveling for three weeks or three months, pack exactly the same. Go casual, simple, and very light. Bring the right guidebook for your trip. Remember, there are two kinds of touriststhose who pack light and those who wish they had.

Buy one for each city you go to. So much easier to carry the pocket-sized version (fits in a back pocket) than a ‘full’ book. The majority of the book is spent on actual highlights, walking tours, and recommendations, and it doesn’t waste too much space on the travel ‘basics’ that every book always includes. 9 times out of 10 Rick Steves and his staff are spot on for restaurants, hotels, and tour operators, the 1 miss in 10 is worth it for the 9 hits. The walking tours and info are just the right level of detail, enough to get you what you needs to make sightseeing enjoyable and informative, but not so much that you lose what is important by spending your time with your nose in a book. The tips on saving time in lines are worth the price of the book alone.
Outstanding reference. I'd heard about Rick but it was very helpful weapon for our trip. The huge bonus is the Iphone audio app that has short walking tours. My wife and I downloaded to our phones several of the big tours, museums, etc.. and they were perfect. We like just the big facts and we got the highlights and we we're able to visit famous sites, learn a few great things and move on. So much better than being dragged along on a tour group. It allowed us to control our pace and most audio stuff was 30 minutes and with a few pauses it was just the right size. The book was very accurate w/tips and easy to stuff into your back pocket. Can't imagine traveling without it!
We ordered several of Rick Steves' pocket guidebooks for our trip to Italy. We didn't research the best guide books and ordered based off Amazon reviews. We were not disappointed! These books provide a great deal of information without giving you too much. They recommend restaurants, sites and rate what you should prioritize. We were able to read them on the train to our next city and feel comfortable with what we were doing and how to get around by the time we arrived. I highly recommend!
This book defaults to spending 3 days in the city which was how much time we spent there and worked out great. It offers more or less sightseeing opportunities depending on your time frame. This book was perfect for our trip and gave step-by-step tours of the bigger sights. Without this book, we would have missed a lot of great sights in Florence that we would never have known about. This book is small enough to easily carry in small bag as you go. We met some people on the trip who commented that it was better than having a tour guide.
We took a day trip to Florence from Rome on the Frecciarosa fast train, giving us about 13 hours to see what we could see in Florence. Thanks to the info in this book and on Rick Steves' TV show we knew to advance book tickets for the Accademia Gallery and the Uffizi Gallery and to work the rest of our schedule around that. We got to see quite a bit in Florence on that day, The Duoumo, Santa Croce, Piazzale Michaelangelo (for the great city views), Ponte Vecchio, Church of Osranmichelle, as well as the two big galleries and without any undue haste.
I like his regional larger books best. I had these pockets and his larger Italy book and ended up carrying the bigbook everywhere, which added a weight to my "purse"! In our apartments we found the regional books and were much more detailed than the pockey city books, and smaller than my large Italy book.Well, that's how we learn. Next time, and there will be a next time, I will get the regional books!Rick needs to know that all the "vendors" over there love him!
Rick Steves knows his stuff. His humor is a little dry and quirky but his knowledge of art and traveling is unparalleled. If you want to do your own vacation without a tour group (you'll despise tour groups if you arent part of one) and dont want to waste your time, GET THIS. Well worth the cash and its weight in gold. Just be sure to double check museum times as they change.
Loved these books. We got one for each city we visited, and all the info was spot on - up to date, and very useful. Every recommendation he had that we did was great. We also downloaded his audio tours to listen to on our phones and I liked those as well. He hits all the relevant details without being boring and long winded.
